At the G7 summit in Canada, a senior U.S. official confirmed that President Donald Trump will not endorse a proposed declaration calling for the de-escalation of tensions between Israel and Iran. The draft communiqué also addresses energy market stability and underscores that Iran should never acquire nuclear weapons. The official noted Trump “believes he has already publicly addressed the issue and sees no reason to sign the document”.
Amid escalating Israeli‑Iranian hostilities, Trump has also chosen to leave the summit a day early, citing the need to return to Washington to prioritize U.S. responses. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that “much was accomplished, but because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight”.
His departure casts uncertainty over whether the G7 can issue any unified declaration on pivotal geopolitical issues, with divisions evident on responses to the Israel‑Iran crisis.
