The ongoing feud between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has taken an uglier turn, escalating into a war of words on social media and public platforms. The dispute intensified after Musk criticized Trump’s recently proposed tariffs, warning they could push the U.S. economy toward a recession. Trump, in turn, dismissed Musk’s concerns, alleging that the tech billionaire was reacting negatively due to his electric vehicle business being affected by the rollback of government subsidies.
This clash has already had significant financial repercussions. Tesla’s stock took a sharp nosedive, losing over 14% of its value, which wiped out nearly \$150 billion in market capitalization. Investors appeared spooked by Musk's open criticism of Trump’s economic policies, interpreting it as a sign of potential regulatory and political hurdles should Trump return to power.
The feud also extends beyond economic concerns, with both men throwing veiled and not-so-veiled personal jabs. Musk has voiced his discontent over Trump’s style of governance, while Trump has attacked Musk’s credibility and business model.
