A terror attack in Niger’s Dosso region on July 15 claimed the lives of two Indian nationals employed by Transrail Lighting Ltd, while a third Indian worker was abducted and another remains missing, Indian officials have confirmed. Forty-year-old Ganesh Karmali, from Bokaro, Jharkhand, was fatally shot during the assault, which also killed six local security personnel. Karmali’s brother-in-law sustained injuries in the attack and is now under police protection in Niger.
An activist identified the second deceased as Krishnan, from southern India. The abducted worker has been named as Ranjit Singh, hailing from Jammu & Kashmir. The fourth individual remains unaccounted for.
The Embassy of India in Niamey issued a statement calling on Indian nationals in Niger to remain vigilant. It is working closely with local authorities, the employer, and the families to ensure safe repatriation of Karmali’s body and the early release of the abducted individual. Reportedly, compensation of ₹5 lakh under India’s International Migrant Workers’ Security Scheme will be granted to the bereaved family.
The incident underscores growing instability in western Niger, which has seen rising jihadist activity in areas bordering Mali and Benin—heightening risks for migrant workers in the region.
