India is witnessing a rise in COVID-19 cases, attributed to new Omicron subvariants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7. However, health experts assert that these variants pose a low threat, with most infections resulting in mild symptoms.
Dr. Vineeta Bal, former scientist at the National Institute of Immunology, emphasized that the current situation differs significantly from the 2021 Delta wave. She noted that widespread vaccination and prior exposure have bolstered community immunity, reducing the severity of new infections. Most fatalities are among the elderly or individuals with underlying health conditions .
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) advises the public not to panic. They recommend continued preventive measures, such as mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and social distancing, especially for high-risk groups.
As of June 4, 2025, India reported 4,302 active COVID-19 cases, with nearly 300 new cases in the preceding 24 hours. States like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Kerala are experiencing a steady rise in cases.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to remain vigilant and adhere to recommended safety protocols.
