In a strong assertion of linguistic pride, Maharashtra Minister Yogesh Kadam has declared that speaking Marathi is mandatory in the state. During a public address, Kadam emphasized that anyone found disrespecting the Marathi language will face consequences.
“Whoever lives in Maharashtra must speak Marathi. If anyone disrespects our language, we will deal with them accordingly,” he said. The statement has stirred debate over linguistic identity, state pride, and inclusivity.
Kadam, who is the Minister of State for Cooperation and Other Backward Classes Welfare, made the comments in Palghar, highlighting how language is deeply linked to cultural respect and regional belonging.
While some have lauded the minister’s remarks as necessary to preserve the cultural heritage of Maharashtra, others argue it may alienate non-Marathi speakers living in the state.
