Himachal Pradesh has become the first state in India to introduce Aadhaar-based face authentication (FaceAuth) for ration distribution under the Public Distribution System (PDS). The initiative addresses frequent challenges with traditional OTP-based and biometric authentication methods, including SMS delivery failures and biometric mismatches.
The new system utilizes mobile cameras through apps installed on fair price shop owners' smartphones, enabling direct facial authentication of beneficiaries. Principal Advisor to the Chief Minister Gokul Butail emphasized that this technological advancement demonstrates the state's commitment to leveraging digital technology for enhanced public service delivery.
The FaceAuth mechanism is expected to improve authentication success rates, reduce verification time, and ensure faster, more efficient ration distribution while promoting inclusive access to essential services.
