In a dramatic Round 6 clash at Norway Chess 2025, reigning World Champion D Gukesh stunned World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen with his first classical win over the Norwegian legend.
Despite being in a losing position, 18-year-old Gukesh capitalised on a rare blunder by Carlsen after 62 intense moves and over four hours of play. Carlsen, frustrated, banged the table in disbelief but quickly composed himself and congratulated Gukesh.
This crucial win boosts Gukesh to third place, just one point behind Carlsen, reshaping the tournament standings. The victory is especially sweet for Gukesh, who had earlier lost to Carlsen in the opening round. His coach, Grzegorz Gajewski, called it a “huge confidence pump.”
The day was also memorable for Indian chess as Arjun Erigaisi won his Armageddon game, and Koneru Humpy’s blunder against Vaishali added further drama in the women’s section. Indian chess continues to shine on the global stage.
