Canada forward Olivia Smith became women's soccer's most expensive player when Arsenal signed her from Liverpool for a reported £1 million ($1.34 million) on Thursday. The four-year deal surpasses the previous record of £900,000 that Chelsea paid for Naomi Girma in January.

The 20-year-old Smith has risen rapidly through European football, scoring 16 goals in 28 appearances for Sporting Clube in Portugal before netting nine times in 25 games at Liverpool. She became Canada's youngest international at 15 in 2019.

"Olivia is an exciting young player and we believe she can make a big contribution here at Arsenal," said head coach Renee Slegers. Smith expressed excitement about competing for "the biggest titles in England and Europe" with the 15-time English champions.
