At a Cabinet meeting held at the White House on July 8, 2025, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio credited former President Donald Trump with preventing a full-scale war between India and Pakistan during his term. Sitting beside Trump, Rubio said, “Under your leadership, we’ve prevented and ended a war between India and Pakistan.”
Trump echoed this claim, stating he had warned both countries that the U.S. would cut off trade if hostilities escalated. “I told them—if you fight, there’s no trade with America,” he recounted, suggesting the threat was enough to halt rising tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
The claim, however, has stirred skepticism and debate among foreign policy analysts. Neither India nor Pakistan has confirmed any direct role played by Trump during recent border escalations. Critics argue that while diplomatic pressure from the U.S. may have played a role, attributing peace solely to Trump oversimplifies a complex geopolitical situation.
The remark has reignited discussion around Trump’s foreign policy legacy - bold, controversial, and often self-congratulatory.
