With global temperatures soaring due to climate change, the mental toll of extreme heat is becoming a growing concern. While heatstroke and dehydration are widely recognized, experts now warn of lesser-known effects—like increased anxiety, depression, and emotional instability.
Dr. Narendra K. Shetty from Kshemavana Naturopathy and Yoga Centre explains that high temperatures trigger stress responses in the body, elevating cortisol and adrenaline. This hormonal spike can lead to irritability, restlessness, mood swings, and even aggression. People with pre-existing mental health issues are at greater risk.
Poor sleep during hot nights worsens emotional control, reduces resilience, and can cause social withdrawal and isolation. It may also impair memory, concentration, and decision-making abilities.
To cope, it's essential to prioritize cooling measures and ensure access to mental health support during heatwaves. As climate change intensifies, so does the urgency to protect not just our bodies, but our minds too.
