Doctors warn, heatwave is silently wrecking kids’ digestion. Parents, act now!

As summer heat intensifies, children are particularly vulnerable to gastrointestinal issues. Elevated temperatures and dehydration strain the digestive system, reducing appetite, slowing metabolism, and diverting blood flow away from the gut—often leading to cramps, heartburn, constipation, or diarrhea. Meanwhile, bacteria thrive in warm, moist environments, significantly increasing the risk of food poisoning, gastroenteritis, and other stomach bugs.

Kids’ developing immunity and outdoor exposure further elevate risks like norovirus, dysentery, and typhoid, exacerbated by poor hand hygiene and consumption of contaminated food and water . Symptoms such as watery diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, and dehydration are common and can escalate rapidly during heatwaves.

To protect children’s gut health this summer, medical experts recommend:

  • Stay hydrated: Encourage regular intake of water, coconut water, buttermilk or oral rehydration solutions to replenish fluids and electrolytes.

  • Eat light, frequent meals: Opt for seasonal fruits (watermelon, cucumber), yogurt, probiotics, and homemade food over oily, spicy, or street fare.

  • Practice hygiene: Frequent handwashing, careful food storage, avoiding street foods, and storing perishables correctly helps prevent infections.

  • Time outdoor activities: Avoid peak heat hours and ensure cool, shaded playtimes to reduce heat-induced gut stress.

Watch for warning signs—persistent vomiting, bloody stools, high fever, or signs of severe dehydration—and consult a doctor promptly. With proactive care—good hydration, balanced diet, hygiene, and heat awareness—parents can help children enjoy a healthy, happy summer.
