Covid in India: Active cases cross 3,000 mark; Kerala, Maharashtra on top

India’s active Covid-19 cases surged past the 3,000 mark for the first time in over two years, reaching 3,395 on Saturday, according to the Union Health Ministry. Kerala leads with 1,336 cases, followed by Maharashtra (467) and Delhi (375). The sudden spike includes 685 new cases in the last 24 hours and four deaths, one each from Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

The situation has escalated quickly from 257 active cases on May 22 to 3,395 by May 25. The last time India saw such numbers was April 1, 2023. Health experts have attributed the rise to Omicron subvariants LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1, with the first three being dominant.

Despite concerns, ICMR DG Dr Rajiv Behl has urged people to remain alert but not panic. So far, 22 deaths have been reported in 2025, while 1,170 patients have recovered or been discharged.
