Social media is buzzing with claims that everyday products like sunscreen and perfume might cause cancer. These fears are rooted in the presence of endocrine disruptors - chemicals believed to interfere with hormonal balance and increase risks of hormone-related cancers such as breast or prostate cancer.
Ingredients like oxybenzone (in sunscreens) and synthetic fragrances (in perfumes) are under scrutiny. However, experts including dermatologists from Apollo Hospitals clarify that there is no conclusive scientific proof linking these chemicals directly to cancer in humans. Cases where benzene (a known carcinogen) was found in sunscreens were rare and addressed by safety regulators.
So, should you worry? Not really - the benefits of sun protection far outweigh potential risks. Dermatologists recommend using mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are considered safe. When it comes to perfumes, choose transparent brands or natural essential oils, and avoid spraying directly onto your skin.
In short, don’t let fear override facts. Being an informed consumer-reading labels, checking certifications, and following dermatologist advice-is the best way to protect both your skin and health.
