'Shubman Gill's numbers not healthy as a batter, let alone as captain'

In a bold move, Shubman Gill has been named India’s new Test captain, replacing Rohit Sharma who recently retired from the longest format. Despite having only 32 Tests under his belt with an average of 35.05, selectors see Gill as an investment for the future. His overseas average of below 30 has raised eyebrows, especially with former cricketers like Aakash Chopra expressing doubts over his readiness.

However, Ajit Agarkar, chairman of selectors, defended the decision stating Gill is a terrific player with long term potential. He will begin his captaincy journey in India’s WTC 2025-27 campaign against England at Headingley. Rishabh Pant will be his vice-captain, while Jasprit Bumrah was overlooked due to workload and fitness concerns.

This marks a crucial leadership transition, as Gill takes on a high-pressure role despite limited experience and with the spotlight firmly on him.
