On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the Rajya Sabha was formally notified that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had accepted Vice‑President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation, which takes effect immediately.
Dhankhar, aged 74, announced his resignation on July 21, invoking Article 67(a) of the Constitution to prioritize his health. This unprecedented mid‑term exit triggers a constitutional process: the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, currently Harivansh Narayan Singh, will temporarily preside over proceedings until a successor is elected .
Under Article 66 of the Constitution, a new Vice‑President must be elected by an Electoral College - members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha - using secret ballots and single transferable vote within 60 days, i.e., by September 19, 2025.
Dhankhar’s unexpected resignation followed his active role during the Monsoon Session, including overseeing opposition-initiated proceedings, which sparked speculation about deeper tensions within political circles . Meanwhile, the race for his replacement has already begun, with contenders from across the ruling alliance emerging.
