Northeast India is grappling with severe floods and landslides triggered by relentless monsoon rains, resulting in at least 36 deaths and affecting over 5.5 lakh people across five states.
Assam: Worst-Hit State
Assam is the hardest-hit state, with more than 5.35 lakh people affected across 22 districts. The Brahmaputra River has breached embankments, submerging 175 villages in 12 districts. The death toll in Assam has reached 11, including fatalities from landslides and drowning incidents. The situation in Lakhimpur district worsened after the sudden release of water from the Panyor Hydro Electric Plant in Arunachal Pradesh, leading to the breach of the River Ranganadi embankment and flooding over 243 villages.
Sikkim: Military Tragedy Amidst Natural Calamity
In Sikkim, three Indian Army personnel died, and six others, including a commanding officer and his family, went missing due to a massive landslide at a forward military post in Chaten, located near the China border. The landslide occurred on Sunday night, approximately 120 kilometers from Gangtok, amid continuous heavy rainfall.
Arunachal Pradesh and Other States
Arunachal Pradesh has reported 10 deaths, with several areas cut off due to landslides and flooding. Mizoram and Manipur are also severely affected, with widespread road blockages and infrastructure damage. In Manipur, many areas in Imphal remain flooded, hindering rescue and relief operations.
Ongoing Challenges and Relief Efforts
Rescue operations are underway, with the Indian Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed in the affected regions. However, continuous rainfall hampers these efforts. Authorities have issued red alerts in several districts, urging residents to evacuate to safer areas. The state governments are coordinating with central agencies to provide relief materials and restore essential services.
The situation remains critical, and authorities are closely monitoring weather patterns to mitigate further damage.
