On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI‑171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, crashed into a hostel near Ahmedabad Airport shortly after takeoff, resulting in 241 fatalities on board and at least 38 deaths on the ground, with a single survivor.
A striking detail: investigators noted the aircraft used the entire 3.5 km runway, far beyond the usual 2.5–3 km, to gain lift—signalling a possible thrust deficiency. Seventeen seconds after liftoff, the cockpit issued the chilling call: “Thrust not achieved… falling… Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!”, followed by rapid descent and impact.
Preliminary investigations are focused on engine performance, wing flap deployment, and landing gear status . The black box flight data recorder has been recovered; the cockpit voice recorder is still missing. Bird strike has been largely ruled out, and experts are examining whether there was a technical failure, flap misconfiguration, pilot error, or even sabotage.
