Mumbai witnessed its earliest monsoon in 75 years, unleashing torrential rainfall on Monday that flooded streets, disrupted transport, and claimed lives across Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the city, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
Key areas like CSMT, Churchgate, Hindmata, and Nariman Point were submerged in knee-deep water. The Acharya Atre Chowk metro station was flooded, forcing Mumbai Metro Line 3 to suspend operations. Suburban train services also came to a halt due to waterlogging on tracks.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Eknath Shinde cited early rains as the cause of the disruption, while opposition leaders Aaditya Thackeray and Congress blamed government mismanagement and alleged corruption in drainage and road works.
The BMC recorded over 250 mm rainfall in South Mumbai, while six rain-related deaths were reported statewide.
