Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is facing mounting criticism for inviting his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, to the upcoming G7 summit in Alberta, even as a high-profile murder investigation casts a shadow over India-Canada relations. The RCMP has concluded that the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia was orchestrated by individuals linked to the “highest levels” of the Indian government.
Carney, citing India’s global economic weight and centrality to critical supply chains, defended his decision but refrained from commenting directly on Modi’s alleged involvement, pointing to the ongoing legal process. Four Indian nationals have been charged, but India continues to deny any role in the assassination.
The World Sikh Organization condemned the invitation, calling it a betrayal of Canadian values. “India has done far more on Canadian soil in terms of foreign interference and transnational repression,” said WSO President Danish Singh.
Despite diplomatic expulsions and serious allegations, Carney appears intent on resetting ties, not only with India but also with China and the U.S., as his new government tries to navigate an increasingly turbulent geopolitical landscape. Whether pragmatism can outweigh outrage remains to be seen.
