The Mizo National Front (MNF) has called for a total shutdown across Mizoram on October 29 to protest the state government’s decision to adopt the Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act (FCAA), 2023.
The MNF says the new law could allow the central government to take control of large forest areas in Mizoram, especially those located within 100 kilometres of international borders. Under this amendment, projects like roads, military infrastructure, or development works can be carried out in these zones without needing special forest clearances.
Mizoram, being a border state that shares boundaries with Myanmar and Bangladesh, falls entirely within this 100-km range. The MNF and several local groups fear that this could weaken state control over its forests, affect tribal land rights, and harm the environment.
The MNF also reminded that it had opposed the Act when it was in power earlier, calling it “harmful to the interests of the Mizo people.” Now, it accuses the current government of acting against the state’s interests by adopting it.
Civil society groups, student unions, and other political parties in Mizoram have also voiced strong opposition. Many have urged the government to repeal the resolution adopting the FCAA, calling it a threat to Mizoram’s autonomy and natural heritage.
