In a landmark decision, the Karnataka state cabinet has ratified the Menstrual Leave Policy, 2025, granting women employees one paid leave day per month to attend to menstrual health. The policy covers both public and private sectors including IT firms, garment factories, multinational companies, and industries operating within the state.
Officials emphasize this move as a progressive step toward creating more inclusive workplaces and destigmatizing menstrual health. Minister H.K. Patil noted that Karnataka is following in the footsteps of states like Kerala, Odisha, and Bihar, but is unique in applying this policy universally.
Yet, challenges loom. Enforcement across private employers, small enterprises, and informal sectors remains uncertain. Monitoring misuse or discrimination, integrating leaves into existing HR systems, and ensuring awareness will test implementation. If executed well, this policy may set a precedent for other states to adopt similar protections, reinforcing that workplace policies must reflect women’s real health needs.
