
India is grappling with a paradox: while employers report widespread skills shortages across sectors—from AI to blue-collar trades—professionals who’ve taken career breaks remain unfairly sidelined. This is particularly true for women, who face both societal expectations and hiring bias, despite their potential to re-enrich the workforce. Career breaks often carry stigma, with hiring managers perceiving gaps as signs of diminished commitment or outdated skills. Yet, thoughtful programs like returnships can successfully reintroduce skilled talent.
Unfortunately, despite growing recognition, these initiatives are often poorly designed or underutilized, limiting their impact. Embracing break-takers represents a strategic opportunity—not a burden—for companies. Beyond mitigating talent shortages, returnees bring resilience, fresh perspectives, and renewed drive. For sustainable workforce strength, organizations must shift from viewing career breaks as red flags to recognizing them as untapped assets.
