In the early hours of October 24, 2025, a private passenger bus belonging to Kaveri Travels travelling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru crashed into a motorcycle and abruptly caught fire near Chinnatekur village in Kallur mandal, Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh.
According to initial reports, there were about 44-passengers on board, with many of them asleep when the accident occurred at around 3:30 am on NH-44. The motorcycle became trapped under the bus, possibly damaging the fuel tank, which then led to an explosion and rapid spread of flames throughout the vehicle.
Rescue teams and fire-engines from Kurnool were dispatched, but by the time help arrived most of the bus was reduced to charred remains. At least 20 people are feared dead, while others remain injured and are being treated at the Kurnool Government General Hospital.
N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, currently abroad, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of life and instructed senior officials to oversee the relief operations and ensure proper medical care for the injured.
Police have registered a case and launched a full investigation into the cause, including driver escape, fuel tank damage and compliance with safety regulations. The incident has again raised questions about bus safety, emergency exits, vehicle maintenance and highway-risk management in the region.
