In a strategic move ahead of the anticipated Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the 2026 state elections, the BJP’s West Bengal unit has announced plans to set up over 1,000 camps to facilitate applications under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
These camps will be concentrated in districts bordering Bangladesh—areas such as North 24 Parganas, Nadia in South Bengal, as well as Cooch Behar and Uttar Dinajpur in North Bengal—where the party says demographic changes demand attention.
The BJP says the camps aim to reach Hindu refugees who entered India after 2002 and help them apply for citizenship under the CAA, thereby strengthening their electoral base and cleaning up the voter lists.
A workshop was held by the party’s leadership (including B. L. Santhosh) to train workers and representatives of “apolitical” organisations to carry the message to the ground. Critics argue this initiative may blur the lines between citizenship outreach and electoral mobilisation, while the BJP insists it is purely a rights-based project for persecuted minorities.
Time will tell whether the camps translate into tangible applications and how they affect voter dynamics in the border districts.
