Deepfake-style UPI scams - where AI-generated visuals or voice mimic familiar individuals - are on the rise. A recent NDTV webstory outlines key preventive steps. It advises being cautious of unexpected video calls or messages from strangers posing as acquaintances, and always verifying identity—especially before transfers in high-urgency scenarios .
Strengthen protection by using strict privacy settings on social media and sharing minimal personal content, which mitigates the chances of becoming a deepfake target . Enable additional verification within UPI apps such as biometrics or app-based PINs. During suspicious interactions, watch for abnormal facial movements, lip-sync glitches, robotic voices, or awkward pauses in video/voice calls. Avoid rushing into cash transfers without authentication, and promptly report suspected fraud to your bank’s fraud helpline and cybercrime.gov.in.
Complementing these practical tips, broader strategies reinforce defense: establish a family safe-word or passphrase for urgent identity checks ; and always opt to hang up and reconfirm via a trusted channel like a known number.
By combining vigilance, verification habits, and timely reporting, individuals can stay one step ahead of AI-driven UPI fraudsters.
