Your nails can be more than just a beauty statement - they’re windows into your body’s health. The appearance of lines on your nails, whether vertical or horizontal, could indicate nutritional deficiencies or underlying health issues.
Vertical lines are usually harmless and appear naturally with age. But deep ridges, breaking nails, or discoloration may suggest conditions like hypothyroidism, eczema, or lichen planus - an autoimmune disorder. White lines, known as leukonychia, may result from trauma or fungal infections, while Mees’ lines (white bands) may indicate kidney issues or arsenic poisoning.
Black or brown lines (melanonychia) may arise due to injuries, infections, or medications, and black lines could signal deficiencies in vitamin C or zinc. If nail lines are painful, bleeding, or rapidly worsening, it’s vital to seek medical advice. Healthy nails begin with a nutrient-rich diet and regular health check-ups.
