In a major digital crackdown, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has banned 25 OTT platforms, including popular apps like ULLU, ALTT, Big Shots App, and Desiflix, for violating Indian content laws. The government has directed all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to restrict access to these apps for showing obscene and indecent material.
The action was taken under Section 67 and 67A of the IT Act, 2000, Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. The platforms were accused of promoting sexually explicit content, objectionable advertisements, and the indecent portrayal of women.
The government has also warned intermediaries like ISPs to comply with content laws or risk losing their safe harbour protection under Section 79 of the IT Act. This move is aimed at protecting vulnerable audiences, especially minors, from harmful digital content.
With this step, the Indian government is signaling zero tolerance for vulgarity on OTT platforms, ensuring that digital media aligns with legal and cultural norms.
