A rising viral skincare routine—known as “ice dunking” or an ice water facial—has taken the beauty world by storm, backed by celebrities like Alia Bhatt and Ananya Panday. Social media users tout its ability to reduce puffiness, tighten pores, and rejuvenate the skin, but dermatologists caution that its benefits may be fleeting and not without risks.
Dermatologists Dr. Meghana Reddy Endela and Dr. Madhuri Agarwal note that plunging the face into ice-cold water can improve circulation, soothe inflamed skin, and temporarily shrink pores due to vasoconstriction. Dr. Rashmi Sharma adds that while it may decrease redness and enhance radiance, the effects are short-lived.
However, experts warn of potential harm with excessive use. Beginners are advised to limit dips to 15–30 seconds with breaks in between, as prolonged exposure can strip natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation—especially for those with sensitive skin, rosacea, broken capillaries, or severe acne.
The takeaway: ice dunking may offer an invigorating morning boost, ideal for a quick pick-me-up or pre-event glow. But dermatologists stress it should complement—not replace—established skincare routines, with caution for individuals susceptible to cold-induced reactions.
