On June 25, 2025, KPCC general secretary S. Manohar lodged a complaint at Bengaluru's High Grounds police station regarding a post from the BJP Karnataka official X handle. The now-deleted post—shared at 3:54 pm—featured a 38-second video with the caption:
“INDIRA NOT EQUALS INDIA, INDIRA = HITLER.” The video included an edited image of Indira Gandhi sporting a Hitler moustache and focused on India's Emergency era, which BJP called “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” (Constitution Murder Day)
The FIR invokes sections 192 (provocation with intent to cause riot) and 353 (public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, accusing the BJP of defamation and stirring communal disharmony . The investigation is ongoing, and further action is anticipated .
In response, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla defended the post, asserting it was "stating a fact" about the Emergency’s authoritarian measures. He questioned why similar comparisons to current leaders, notably PM Modi, are not met with legal action . Poonawalla highlighted alleged double standards in addressing alleged defamation and political criticism .
