Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has announced its first international acquisition, securing a controlling stake in Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) for up to $52.96 million. The deal positions India's leading defense shipyard strategically within the Port of Colombo, one of the Indian Ocean's busiest transshipment hubs.
CDPLC, established in 1974, is Sri Lanka's largest shipbuilding and repair facility, specializing in ship repair, heavy engineering, and offshore engineering for domestic and international clients. The acquisition provides MDL with crucial access to a strategic maritime corridor.
"This begins MDL's transformation from a domestic shipbuilder to a regional maritime player with global ambitions," the company stated. The move aligns with India's Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, strengthening regional maritime influence while expanding MDL's global footprint in the critical Indian Ocean Region.
