In the race for flawless skin, many are turning to chemical peels, Botox, fillers, microneedling, and laser treatments. But are these procedures increasing your cancer risk?
According to Dr. Iti Parikh, a medical oncologist at Bhailal Amin General Hospital, Gujarat, most treatments are safe when done professionally. However, certain procedures-especially those involving UV exposure or harsh chemicals-might carry long-term health risks.
Dr. Parikh explains that UV therapies, tanning beds, or light-based treatments emit UVA and UVB radiation, which are known carcinogens. Frequent exposure can damage DNA in skin cells, potentially leading to skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and even melanoma.
Some chemicals used in skin procedures-like phenol-have raised cancer concerns in animal studies. Overuse or unregulated cosmetic interventions can also lead to chronic inflammation, a risk factor for cancer.
The bottom line? Know what’s going on your skin, avoid unnecessary radiation, and always consult certified professionals. Beauty should not come at the cost of health.
