In a landmark judgment, the Chennai Mahila Court sentenced A Gnanasekaran to life imprisonment for a minimum of 30 years and imposed a fine of ₹90,000 in the shocking Anna University sexual assault case. The biriyani vendor was arrested in December 2024 after a woman student alleged that he threatened and sexually harassed her while she was with a male friend on campus.
The case, which stirred massive protests across Tamil Nadu, saw SFI and AIDWA members demanding swift justice. The prosecution filed 11 charges under the BNS, BNSS, IT Act, and the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act and proved them using strong documentary and forensic evidence.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) took over after a controversial leak of the FIR. The Mahila court’s firm verdict is being seen as a powerful message against crimes targeting women.
