Tensions in Manipur have intensified following the removal of the state's name from a government bus transporting journalists to the Shirui Lily Festival. The incident occurred on May 20 in Gwaltabi, leading to widespread protests across the Imphal Valley.
On Tuesday, activists from the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) locked the offices of the Geological Survey of India and the Chief Electoral Officer in Imphal West. Additionally, signboards bearing "Government of India" were defaced with mud, symbolizing regional defiance against the central government.
Protests, predominantly led by women, have been reported in various districts, including Imphal East and West. Demonstrators are demanding a public apology from Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the resignation of top state officials, including the Chief Secretary and Security Advisor.
The unrest has prompted the Manipur government to initiate an inquiry into the incident. A two-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter, with a report expected within 15 days.
In a related development, a COCOMI delegation met with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi to discuss the incident and broader concerns affecting the state's integrity.
