India has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in eco-sensitive infrastructure with the creation of its first dedicated wildlife corridor on a national highway. The 12-kilometer stretch on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway passes through Ranthambore Tiger Reserve's buffer zone, featuring five 500-meter wildlife overpasses and India's longest 1.2-kilometer underpass.
Developed in consultation with the Wildlife Institute of India, the project ensures safe passage for tigers, bears, and other endangered species. Nearly 5 kilometers of highway were built elevated or sunken to preserve natural topography, while 4-meter boundary walls and sound barriers minimize wildlife disturbance.
The corridor incorporates sustainable features including 35,000 planted trees, rainwater harvesting systems every 500 meters, and water-efficient drip irrigation. Remarkably, zero wildlife incidents occurred during construction despite the sensitive location.
This pioneering project sets a new standard for balancing infrastructure development with environmental conservation in India.
