A Delta Air Lines flight, DL56, en route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, encountered serious turbulence mid-flight on Wednesday evening, prompting an emergency diversion to Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport. The Airbus A330‑900, carrying 275 passengers and 13 crew members, landed safely around 7:45 p.m. local time, where emergency responders were waiting at the gate to assist .
Twenty‑five people - passengers and possibly crew - were transported to local hospitals for evaluation and care following the incident, though the airline has not disclosed the severity of injuries . A passenger described the event as a series of increasingly violent turbulence waves that sent meal carts and objects flying during service.
Delta expressed gratitude to emergency crews and confirmed its commitment to passenger safety, noting that its Delta Care Team is assisting affected travelers .
Experts say that while turbulence incidents remain uncommon, their frequency may be rising due to climate-related changes affecting jet streams
