Starting November 3, 2025, LinkedIn will roll out updated Terms of Service that expand how user data may be shared with its affiliate, Microsoft, for the purposes of ad personalisation and AI model training.
The new terms allow Microsoft to receive more types of data including LinkedIn profile information, feed activity, and ad engagement from users—though only data that a user’s privacy settings already permit for ad usage. Regions outside the EU, U.K., Canada, Switzerland, Hong Kong, and European Economic Area (EEA) will also see expanded clauses enabling LinkedIn to use public content and profile details to help train generative AI features to assist in creating posts, messages, and profile updates.
Users are automatically opted in for “Data for Generative AI Improvement,” though they may opt out through their settings. LinkedIn emphasizes that private messages will not be used for content-generating AI, and that data used for ad purposes will respect existing user privacy permissions.
These changes aim to provide more personalized experiences but also raise new questions about control, consent, and transparency around user data.
