The world must stop ignoring skin health.

Despite being the body’s largest organ and a crucial part of physical and mental well-being, skin health remains largely overlooked in global health discussions. This year, dermatologists and health advocates are issuing a strong message: there is no health without skin health.

One of the most urgent concerns is the pervasive use of harmful skin bleaching products, often marketed as beauty essentials in regions across Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. These products, many of which contain toxic ingredients like mercury and hydroquinone, not only perpetuate colorism but also pose serious long-term health risks.

The movement calls for policy-level change, stricter regulation of harmful cosmetics, and greater investment in dermatological care - especially for underserved communities. The campaign also pushes for education around skin positivity, breaking the myth that lighter skin equates to higher value.

Healthy skin isn’t cosmetic - it’s essential. Advocates urge that dermatology be treated not as a luxury, but as a basic right within universal healthcare frameworks.
