Tear gas, roadblocks, and petrol-soaked protesters: Manipur unrest intensifies

Protests erupted across Imphal Valley in Manipur over the weekend after security forces arrested Asem Kanan Singh, the self-proclaimed “army chief” of the Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol. Demonstrators burned tyres, blocked roads in Imphal East and West—including Uripok and Kwakeithel—and clashed with police firing tear gas and warning shots.

In response, the government imposed prohibitory orders and overnight curfews across the valley. Internet and mobile data services—including VSAT and VPN—were suspended in five districts (Imphal East and West, Thoubal, Kakching, Bishnupur) for five days starting late June 7 to curb misinformation and prevent escalation.

Video footage showed protesters dousing themselves with petrol in acts of protest, highlighting the intensity of local anger. Despite the shutdown, demonstrations continued, with MLAs and Meitei groups demanding immediate release of the arrested leader.

The central CBI confirmed Kanan Singh's arrest at Imphal airport on charges related to the 2023 ethnic violence and said he was transferred to Guwahati for investigation under Supreme Court directives.
