Sun poisoning, though not a medical term, describes severe sunburn or rare allergic reactions to sunlight, causing intense discomfort.
Severe sunburns, often mistaken for sun poisoning, result from UV ray damage, leading to blistering, swelling, fever, nausea, and dizziness due to dehydration.
Symptoms peak within 24 hours and may linger for weeks. Unlike heat rash or sunstroke, sun poisoning directly stems from skin damage. Treatment includes cool showers, hydration, ibuprofen, and aloe gel; severe cases may require IV fluids or steroids.
Prevention involves using broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, limiting sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and wearing protective clothing.
Sun allergies like polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) or solar urticaria cause itchy rashes or hives post-sun exposure. People with darker skin can also experience sun poisoning, though fair-skinned individuals are at higher risk. Consult a doctor for severe symptoms.
