In a 35‑minute phone call on June 18, Prime Minister Narendra Modi bluntly told U.S. President Donald Trump that India will not seek third-party mediation in its dealings with Pakistan, firmly sticking to its established position.
Modi conveyed that India regards current tensions with Pakistan not as a proxy skirmish, but as a direct confrontation requiring bilateral resolution. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed Modi’s stance, emphasizing that the ceasefire agreed upon—later dubbed “Operation Sindoor”—was negotiated between India and Pakistan directly upon a Pakistani request.
Addressing Trump's repeated claim that the U.S. mediated in the ceasefire, Modi made clear that India maintained full control over the dialogue, negating any external facilitation role. Additionally, Modi assured Trump that discussions with Pakistan would focus solely on dismantling terrorist infrastructure and no broader border negotiations on Kashmir would occur unless these security conditions are met.
Trump echoed condolences over the recent Pahalgam terror attack during the call, acknowledging regional security concerns. Modi responded by reiterating India's policy: no mediation, no third-party intrusion, and no dilution of sovereignty in resolving bilateral disputes.
