The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has uncovered remarkable evidence of an ancient civilization at Bahaj village in Deeg, Bharatpur, ranging from the Mahabharata era through Kushan, Shunga, Maurya, and Gupta periods. Excavations (Jan–July 2024 and Oct 2024–Jun 2025) revealed a 1,700‑year‑old male skeleton, now sent to BHU for dating, along with microlithic tools, bone‑crafted needles, beads, shell bangles, and iron-metal implements spanning multiple eras.
A significant discovery is a 23‑metre-deep paleo-channel, believed to be part of the Saraswati river system, confirming advanced ancient hydraulic engineering. Archaeologists also uncovered 15 Yajna Kundas, votive Shakti tanks, and terracotta statues of Shiva, Parvati, and the Ashwini Kumar twins, alongside unbaked Brahmi-inscribed seals, copper and silver coins, pointing to early religious ritual practices and economic sophistication.
Furthermore, residential structures with earthen posts, stratified trench walls, furnaces, and evidence of metallurgy and bead-making indicate Bahaj was a thriving ancient town. All findings have been submitted to the Culture Ministry for further analysis and site development.
This extraordinary excavation—one of Rajasthan’s largest—offers a rare glimpse into India’s spiritual traditions, trade networks, and urban planning dating back over 3,500 years.
