Kuno's cheetah project suffers blow, injured Namibian cheetah dies!

Nabha, an eight-year-old cheetah translocated from Namibia, died Saturday at Kuno National Park after sustaining severe injuries during a hunting attempt. The cheetah suffered fractures in both ulna and fibula bones along with other injuries, according to Cheetah Project Field Director Uttam Sharma.

Following Nabha's death, KNP now houses 26 cheetahs - nine adults and 17 Indian-born cubs. Sixteen cheetahs roam freely in the wild, successfully adapting to their habitat and hunting regularly. Two mothers, Veera and Nirva, remain healthy with their recently born cubs.

India's cheetah reintroduction project, launched in September 2022, brought 20 African cheetahs to restore the species after local extinction in 1947. Recent infrastructure improvements include solar-powered water systems to protect cubs from extreme heat.
