In Churachandpur, Manipur, hundreds of Kuki-Zo women staged a sit-in protest, demanding an end to what they called “state-backed persecution” and “selective justice.” Organized by the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR), the demonstration submitted a scathing memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah under the banner, “No Justice in Fear”.
The memorandum accuses state authorities of arbitrarily arresting innocent Kuki-Zo individuals under agencies like the NIA and CBI, while leaders of extremist Meitei groups such as Arambai Tenggol escape scrutiny, despite allegations linking them to attacks in Kangvai, Churachandpur, and Langol. It further alleges that tribal governance structures have been dismantled: tribal officers removed, jurisdictions redrawn to favor Meitei dominance, and constitutional protections undermined.
Most alarming, the memorandum highlights horrific cases of gender-based violence against Kuki-Zo women— including mob stripping, molestation, and rape—fueled by fake news campaigns accusing Kuki men of rape.
KWOHR has called for urgent action: halting arbitrary arrests, prosecuting extremist leaders including Korounganba Khuman, restoring tribal administrative autonomy under the Manipur Hill Areas District Council Act, and re-instating tribal officers. They warn that without immediate intervention, peaceful protest may escalate and claim: “We may be grieving, but we are not silent anymore.”
