The Bhubaneswar Metro rail project has encountered a significant hurdle. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRCL) has terminated its contract with Ceigall India Limited, the firm responsible for constructing the first phase of the metro. This phase included building a viaduct and six elevated stations, with the contract valued at ₹898.99 crore. Ceigall India Limited disclosed this development in a stock exchange filing, indicating intentions to seek legal remedies for damages.
Despite this setback, Odisha's Housing and Urban Development Minister, Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, has assured that the metro project will continue. He mentioned that the state government plans to seek support from the Centre and has already formed an inter-ministerial committee to review and revise the project's plans.
The project's delay has sparked discussions on social media, with many expressing concerns over its handling, while others remain hopeful for its successful completion. Opposition leaders, including Naveen Patnaik, have criticized the current administration's management of the project, emphasizing the metro's importance for Bhubaneswar's urban development.
The Bhubaneswar Metro aims to enhance connectivity between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, addressing the transportation needs of the rapidly growing urban population. The project's continuation is seen as vital for the region's infrastructure development.
