From the dry expanse of the White Rann, Kutch, emerges Majikhan Ilamkhan Mutva, a master artisan who transformed his destiny through Lippan Kaam, a traditional mud-and-mirror craft practised in the Mutwa community. Born in Siniyado village where only five artisans knew the art Majikhan chose to master Lippan work over formal education, despite social and financial constraints.
Lippan art crafted using soil, cow dung, glue, water, and tiny mirrors adorned Bhanga huts for centuries, offering both beauty and temperature regulation. Majikhan’s designs honor tradition yet blend modern forms, working on both framed pieces and large architectural installations. A recent standout is a 30 × 9.5 ft corridor wall in Hyderabad, showcasing fine mirror patterns in geometric layouts.
Majikhan’s influence extends beyond creations. He has garnered awards the India Book of Records, Global Dictionary Wall Record, and Kripal Singh Shekhawat Award while training new artisans across eight Indian states. His aim is to birth 500 new Majikhans, ensuring Lippan’s survival and outreach.
With growing online presence and tie-ups on platforms like MeMeraki, Majikhan champions indigenous Lippan art globally. His journey from labourer to renowned craftsman is not just personal but emblematic of heritage preservation fused with enterprise. His vibrant creations reflect Kutch’s resilience in mud-and-mirror brilliance anchoring culture in art, identity, and community empowerment.
