The Registrar General of India has unveiled plans for the first fully digital Census, scheduled in two phases: Houselisting starting April 1, 2026, and Population Enumeration from February 1, 2027 . For the first time, citizens can self-enumerate via a dedicated web portal, while enumerators will use Android and iOS mobile apps to collect data securely.
Officials promise this digital transformation will ensure early availability of Census data, potentially within nine months after completion - far faster than past cycles. The portal and apps will support 16 languages, and stringent data security measures will be enforced at all stages.
With 34 lakh trained enumerators, the Census will cover census blocks nationwide, including caste enumeration and precise boundary freezes. This transformational shift aims to modernize methodology, improve data quality, and empower citizens through active participation.
