In a landmark development for India's space sector, the space regulator IN-SPACe has entrusted Google-backed startup PixxelSpace with leading a consortium comprising PixxelSpace, Piersight Space, Satsure Analytics India, and Dhruva Space to develop and manage the country’s first fully homegrown commercial Earth observation (EO) satellite constellation. Spanning a ₹1,200-crore investment over the next five years, this ambitious public–private partnership (PPP) marks a bold stride toward technological self-reliance in space infrastructure.
The initiative aims to build, launch, and operate a constellation of 12 advanced EO satellites equipped with panchromatic, multispectral, hyperspectral, and microwave SAR sensors designed for applications like precision agriculture, climate monitoring, urban planning, and resource management. Beyond enhancing data sovereignty, the project reflects India’s growing embrace of private-sector innovation in strategic domains and aligns with broader policy ambitions, including reducing reliance on foreign navigation and imaging systems.
This milestone solidifies PixxelSpace’s role as a pivotal player in India’s space-tech revolution, building upon its earlier successes under NASA contracts and its Firefly hyperspectral satellite constellation.
