Ghevar: The Sweet that defines Raksha Bandhan Celebrations!

A Festival Favorite

Ghevar, a crisp, disc-shaped dessert made from refined flour, ghee (clarified butter), and sugar syrup, holds a special place during Raksha Bandhan—a festival celebrating the bond between siblings. This sweet finds its roots in Rajasthan’s royal cuisine and has since spread across North India, becoming an essential part of festive offerings and cultural rituals.

Why Ghevar Reigns Supreme on Rakhi

In regions like Braj—encompassing Agra, Mathura, and nearby areas—ghevar dominates Raksha Bandhan sweet counters, accounting for up to 75% of sales during the season. Halwais (traditional confectioners) report skyrocketing demand in Sawan and Bhadon months, as families choose ghevar over other mithai like pedas or laddu.

Cultural Customs and Ceremonial Gift Exchange

The tradition goes beyond taste - ghevar is often included in the sargi, a gift sent by brothers to their newly married sisters on Raksha Bandhan. This gesture reinforces familial bonds and adds sweet sentiment to the occasion . In many households, especially in Uttar Pradesh, ghevar is now a must-have Rakhi treat.
