Indian Railways has achieved a breakthrough in eco-friendly transport with its first hydrogen-powered train coach a Driving Power Car successfully tested at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Developed under the "Hydrogen for Heritage" initiative, this milestone sets the stage for a new era in sustainable mobility.
Featuring a powerful 1,200 HP hydrogen fuel-cell engine the most potent of its kind globally the train supports India’s ambition to decarbonise rail operations by 2030. Capable of ferrying over 2,600 passengers across eight coaches, it offers both capacity and environmental responsibility.
The pilot route between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana is already set, with backing infrastructure involving hydrogen production and refueling installations underway.
While initial operational costs are higher, economies of scale and technology maturation are expected to drive future reductions. This initiative positions India among the few global leaders in hydrogen rail technology and underscores the nation’s dedication to green innovation and net-zero ambitions.
