India has officially become the world's leading user of ChatGPT, surpassing countries like the United States (8.9%) and Indonesia (5.7%) with a 13.5% share of global monthly active users, according to Mary Meeker’s latest report on AI trends.
Not only that, India also dominates in AI mobile app downloads, accounting for 21% of global AI app installs—including popular tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini.
However, most users in India are using these apps for free, contributing only 2% of global in-app purchases—indicating a large but cost-sensitive market.
A recent survey also revealed that 60% of Indian professionals now use generative AI tools, yet only 31% feel adequately trained by their organizations to use them effectively.
This growing usage highlights India’s rapid AI adoption, but also points to the urgent need for better training and clearer AI policies to harness its full potential.
